How did these people live?

Shepherd life in the hills of Judah was simple and demanding. Families lived in tents or simple stone houses. They ate bread, olives, and milk. Days were spent with the flock, and wolves and lions were a real danger. Life centered on family and flock.

When is this taking place?

David lived around 1000 BC — about 3,000 years ago — and later became king of Israel. Psalm 23 does not tell us when in his life he wrote it.

  1. Creation
  2. Noah
  3. Abraham
  4. Moses and the Exodus
  5. David the shepherd kingYou are here — about 1000 BC
  6. Exile
  7. Jesus
  8. The Church
  9. New Creation

Where is this today?

How family lines will look

The pattern every genealogy in October’s readings will follow.

A family line moving toward Jesus

Instead of a long list, names will be connected so you can see the story move forward.

Adam Noah Abraham David Jesus

Every family line keeps pointing forward to Jesus.

A thought in plain words

Before the flood, people lived for centuries — so the generations overlapped. A grandfather could sit down and teach his great-great-great-great-grandchildren face to face. That is living memory. And that is part of what makes the road to Jesus so remarkable.
