Day 1 · January 1
A devotional for today
Today’s readings
- Old Testament: GENESIS 1:1-2:25
- New Testament: MATTHEW 1:1-2:12
- Psalm: PSALM 1:1-1:6
- Proverb: PROVERBS 1:1-1:6
Old Testament
God speaks the world into being, orders chaos, fills creation with life, and forms humanity in his image to know him, rule under him, and flourish in Eden. Creation begins not with chance but with the sovereign goodness of God.
New Testament
Matthew opens with Jesus’ genealogy, showing him as the promised Son of David and Son of Abraham. His birth fulfills prophecy, draws humble worshipers from afar, and reveals the King whom even powerful rulers fear.
Psalm
Psalm 1 contrasts the rooted, fruitful life of the righteous with the unstable way of the wicked. Blessing belongs to the one who delights in God’s instruction.
Proverb
Proverbs introduces the book’s purpose: wisdom, discipline, insight, and skill for godly living. Wisdom begins as a gift to be received with a teachable heart.
Discover
Jesus is present both at creation and at the new creation. The Word through whom all things were made enters history as the promised Messiah to restore what sin will later ruin.
Reflect
The Bible’s story begins with God, not with us. When life feels fragmented, today’s readings call us back to the God who creates with purpose and leads history toward
Christ.
