Day 16 · January 16
A devotional for today
Today’s readings
- Old Testament: GENESIS 32:13-34:31
- New Testament: MATTHEW 11:7-30
- Psalm: PSALM 14:1-7
- Proverb: PROVERBS 3:19-20
Old Testament
Jacob wrestles through the night, receives a new name, and then meets Esau in surprising peace. Yet the chapters also include Dinah’s violation and the violent revenge of Simeon and Levi, reminding us that human brokenness lingers even after grace encounters us.
New Testament
Jesus honors John, rebukes unresponsive cities, and invites the weary to take his yoke. His kingdom is revealed not to the self-satisfied but to the humble.
Psalm
Psalm 14 exposes universal human corruption: no one naturally seeks God as they should. The world’s deepest problem is not merely social but spiritual.
Proverb
The Lord founded the earth by wisdom. The same wisdom that shaped creation is available for godly living.
Discover
Jesus gives a new identity, as God did for Jacob, but in a deeper and lasting way. He also answers Psalm 14’s diagnosis by becoming the righteous one who rescues fools and makes them new.
Reflect
Transformation is real, but it is often partial and unfolding. God changes names and futures, yet he continues to sanctify people who still live in a wounded world.
Fellowship
What does Jacob’s wrestling teach about prayer and surrender?
Why does Jesus pair revelation with gentleness and rest?
How does Psalm 14 level the ground before God?
What does it mean to learn from the yoke of Christ?
Prayer
God of grace, meet me in my struggle and shape me through it. Give me the humility to receive the rest and instruction of Jesus.
Live
Ask God to reveal one place where you still resist surrender, then entrust it to him.
