Day 8 · January 8
A devotional for today
Today’s readings
- Old Testament: GENESIS 18:16-19:38
- New Testament: MATTHEW 6:25-7:14
- Psalm: PSALM 8:1-9
- Proverb: PROVERBS 2:6-15
Old Testament
Abraham intercedes for Sodom, but the city’s wickedness ripens into judgment. Lot is rescued by mercy, yet compromise leaves deep scars, and the chapter ends with the sobering fruit of a life lived too close to corruption.
New Testament
Jesus turns from anxiety to trust, calling his disciples to seek first God’s kingdom, judge themselves before judging others, ask boldly, and enter by the narrow gate. The life of faith is both rested and rigorous.
Psalm
Psalm 8 marvels that the majestic Creator is mindful of frail humanity and has crowned people with honor. Human dignity is grounded in God’s attentive care.
Proverb
Wisdom, knowledge, and discernment are God’s gifts that protect us from crooked paths. True understanding guards both belief and behavior.
Discover
Jesus is the greater righteous One who not only intercedes, as Abraham did, but actually saves his people from judgment. He also restores the true dignity of humanity celebrated in Psalm 8.
Reflect
Today holds together tenderness and warning: God invites trust, prayer, and humble dependence, yet he also exposes the danger of drifting near sin. Mercy should not make us casual about holiness.
Fellowship
What do you learn from Abraham’s intercession?
How does Jesus’ teaching on anxiety challenge you personally?
Why is the narrow gate both gracious and demanding?
What protections does wisdom provide in a morally confusing world?
Prayer
Merciful God, keep me from growing comfortable with what grieves you. Teach me to trust you, seek you first, and walk the narrow way with joy.
Live
Act on one anxiety by turning it into a specific prayer and an act of trust rather than a cycle of worry.
