Genesis 1:1–2:25 · Matthew 1:1–2:12 · Psalm 1:1–1:6 · Proverbs 1:1–1:6
Today’s story
God speaks the world into being, orders chaos, fills creation with life, and forms humanity in his image to know him, rule under him, and flourish in Eden. Creation begins not with chance but with the sovereign goodness of God.
Matthew opens with Jesus’ genealogy, showing him as the promised Son of David and Son of Abraham. His birth fulfills prophecy, draws humble worshipers from afar, and reveals the King whom even powerful rulers fear.
Psalm 1 contrasts the rooted, fruitful life of the righteous with the unstable way of the wicked. Blessing belongs to the one who delights in God’s instruction.
Proverbs introduces the book’s purpose: wisdom, discipline, insight, and skill for godly living. Wisdom begins as a gift to be received with a teachable heart.
The story in children’s words
In the beginning, God made the whole world. He made light and sky, land and seas. He made plants and trees, the sun, the moon, and the stars. He made the fish, the birds, and every animal. Then God made people, and He put them in a beautiful garden. God looked at all He had made, and it was very good. The Bible also tells the family story of a baby named Jesus, who was born long, long after. God was getting the world ready for Jesus, the One who would come to save us.
It points to Jesus
Jesus is present both at creation and at the new creation. The Word through whom all things were made enters history as the promised Messiah to restore what sin will later ruin.
