The story in children’s words

After Joshua died, the tribes kept fighting for their land. Judah and Simeon helped each other, and they won many battles. But some tribes did not drive out all the people who worshiped false gods, and those people stayed and lived among them. God's angel told the people they had not obeyed His voice, and the people lifted up their voices and wept. Then Jesus told His friends to watch and pray, like people who watch a fig tree's leaves to know that summer is near. That same week, Judas agreed to hand Jesus over to His enemies. But Jesus sent Peter and John to get the Passover meal ready for them all. Jesus knew hard days were coming soon, and He tells us to watch, pray, and stay close to Him.
