Day 142 · May 22
Kids Corner — Day 142
2 Samuel 1:1–2:11 · John 12:20–50 · Psalm 118:19–29 · Proverbs 15:27–28
Today’s story
David mourns Saul and Jonathan instead of celebrating an enemy's death. He then becomes king over Judah.
Jesus says the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified and speaks of being lifted up to draw people to Himself.
The psalm rejoices in the day the LORD has made and cries, 'Save us.'
Greed troubles a household; the righteous think before answering.
The story in children’s words
A messenger came to David with Saul's crown and told him Saul and Jonathan were dead. Instead of rejoicing, David tore his clothes, wept, and fasted, and he sang a sad song about Saul and his beloved friend Jonathan: "How the mighty have fallen!" David remembered their courage and kindness and asked everyone to weep for them. After this, God told David to go up to Hebron, and the men of Judah anointed David as king over Judah. David sent a kind message to the brave men of Jabesh Gilead who had buried Saul. In Jesus' day, some visitors from far away asked to see Jesus, and Jesus said His hour had come. He said that a grain of wheat must fall into the ground and die to make much more grain, and that He would be lifted up and draw all people to Himself. A voice from heaven spoke, and many heard it like thunder. David honored a king who had hunted him, and Jesus went to the cross to draw the whole world to Himself.
It points to Jesus
David's kingdom begins through mourning, not revenge. Jesus' kingdom is revealed through self-giving death, not grasping power.
