Today’s story

David is preserved as competing counsel unfolds, and God frustrates the plan that would have destroyed him.

Jesus completes His work on the cross, dies, and is buried with care by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus.

God's words give light and sustain the psalmist through distress.

Righteous rule rejects wickedness and values truthful speech.

The story in children’s words

Ahithophel told Absalom to chase David that very night with twelve thousand men while David was weary. But God had planned to defeat that advice. Hushai warned Absalom that David and his men were mighty and fierce, and advised gathering all Israel first, and Absalom chose Hushai's advice instead. Hushai quickly sent word through the priests' sons to warn David to cross the river, and the two young messengers hid in a well and escaped. David and all his people crossed the Jordan safely before morning, and kind friends brought them beds, food, and everything they needed in the wilderness. In Jesus' day, soldiers at the cross divided Jesus' clothes and cast lots for His tunic, just as Scripture had said. Jesus cared for His mother from the cross and gave her into the care of His beloved disciple. Then He said, "It is finished," and bowed His head and died. His bones were not broken, just as Scripture said, and Joseph and Nicodemus laid His body in a new tomb in a garden. David was saved by God's hidden plan, and through Jesus' finished work on the cross, God saves us too.

It points to Jesus

May ends at the cross. Human kings are preserved for a time; Jesus gives His life willingly. His saving work is finished, and the story is moving toward resurrection witness and the Spirit-empowered church.

Talk about it
