Today’s story

David crosses the Kidron in sorrow while betrayal, counsel, and political maneuvering surround him.

Peter denies Jesus. Pilate presents Him to the crowd, and Jesus is condemned and crucified under the title 'King of the Jews.'

The psalmist loves God's word and hates double-mindedness.

Kings are accountable to justice, and honest scales belong to the LORD.

The story in children’s words

David fled from Jerusalem with all his household, and everyone wept with a loud voice as they crossed the brook. David sent God's ark back into the city, saying that if God was pleased with him, God would bring him back again. He climbed the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went, with his head covered and his feet bare. He sent his friend Hushai back to the city to undo the wise but wicked advice of Ahithophel, who had joined Absalom. Along the way, one man brought David's people food and donkeys, while another man, Shimei, threw stones and cursed the king, and David would not let his men harm him. Absalom entered Jerusalem and took his father's house. In Jesus' day, Peter stood by a fire and said three times that he did not know Jesus, and the rooster crowed, just as Jesus had said. Then Jesus stood before Pilate and said, "My kingdom is not of this world," and Pilate could find no fault in Him, but the crowds chose a robber instead. Jesus wore a crown of thorns and was called the King of the Jews, and He truly is the King, though His kingdom is not from here.

It points to Jesus

David is a rejected king crossing the Kidron; Jesus is the rejected King who crosses through suffering to the cross. The title meant as accusation speaks truth: He is King.

Talk about it

Read the crucifixion account aloud and sit quietly for one minute.
