Today’s story

Elisha raises the Shunammite’s son, feeds many, and Naaman is cleansed when he humbly obeys. God’s grace reaches outsiders, while Gehazi’s greed brings ruin.

The Jerusalem council rejects the idea that Gentiles must earn salvation through the Law. Peter’s conclusion is clear: we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus.

David asks God to guard his mouth and keep his heart from evil.

Bribery corrupts justice. Jesus calls His people to truth and impartial love.

The story in children’s words

The Shunammite woman's little boy cried, "My head! My head!" and died in her arms. She laid him on Elisha's bed and rode fast to the man of God. Elisha shut the door, prayed, and stretched himself over the child, and the boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes alive! Then Elisha took poison out of a pot of stew with a little flour, and twenty small loaves fed a hundred men with some left over. Naaman, a great captain of Syria, had leprosy, and a little Israelite servant girl told him about the prophet. Naaman was angry that Elisha only said, "Wash in the Jordan seven times." But his servants persuaded him, he dipped seven times, and his skin became clean like a little child's, and he said, "There is no God in all the earth but in Israel." Elisha would take no gift, but his servant Gehazi ran after Naaman, lied, and took silver and clothes in secret, and Naaman's leprosy came upon Gehazi instead. In Jerusalem, the apostles decided together that people of all nations are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as Peter had seen God give them the Holy Spirit, cleansing their hearts by faith. Jesus saves by grace, and no one has to earn His love.

It points to Jesus

Naaman receives cleansing he cannot buy. Acts 15 makes the same gospel truth unmistakable: salvation is God’s grace, not a wage we earn.
