Exodus 5:22–7:25 · Matthew 18:21–19:12 · Psalm 23:1–23:6 · Proverbs 5:22–5:23
Today’s story
Moses brings Israel’s complaint to God, and the Lord responds by declaring again who he is and by striking Egypt with the first plagues. God’s deliverance unfolds according to his word, even when hardened hearts resist.
Jesus teaches radical forgiveness, the sanctity of marriage, and the seriousness of receiving the kingdom like a child. Grace never trivializes truth; it empowers faithful relationships and soft hearts.
Psalm 23 portrays the Lord as shepherd, guide, provider, defender, and host. Life with God is not free from dark valleys, but it is full of his presence.
The wicked are trapped by their own sin, but discipline and wisdom preserve life. Sin’s cords tighten gradually until they hold fast.
The story in children’s words
Moses asked God why things had gotten worse, and God said, "Now you will see what I will do." God promised, "I will bring you out of Egypt with a strong hand, and you will be my people." Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh, and it became a serpent that swallowed the other serpents. Still Pharaoh's heart was hard, so God turned the river water into blood, and the fish died. Jesus told Peter to forgive again and again, and told a story of a king who forgave a huge debt. He said we must forgive others from our hearts, just as God forgives us. The psalm says, "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall lack nothing." Jesus is our Good Shepherd, who leads us and forgives us.
It points to Jesus
Jesus is the Good Shepherd of Psalm 23 who leads, protects, and brings his people home. He is also the one who teaches forgiveness because he himself will bear sin’s debt.
Talk about it
Why is God’s self-revelation to Moses so crucial in a time of discouragement?
