Exodus 8:1–9:35 · Matthew 19:13–19:30 · Psalm 24:1–24:10 · Proverbs 6:1–6:5
Today’s story
The plagues intensify, yet Pharaoh hardens his heart again and again. The contest is never really between Moses and Pharaoh but between the Lord and every false claim to sovereignty.
Jesus welcomes children, challenges the rich young ruler, and promises great reward to those who leave all for his sake. Entrance into the kingdom depends on grace, not achievement or wealth.
Psalm 24 announces that the earth belongs to the Lord and asks who may ascend his hill. Clean hands, a pure heart, and joyful welcome for the King of glory are the marks of God’s people.
Wisdom counsels carefulness in promises and financial entanglements. Prudence is part of righteousness.
The story in children’s words
God sent frogs all over Egypt, then tiny bugs, then swarms of flies, and Pharaoh kept saying no. Egypt's farm animals died, sore boils came on the people, and a terrible hailstorm beat down the fields, but God's people in Goshen were kept safe. Again and again Pharaoh promised to let the people go, and again and again his heart turned hard. God's own helpers said, "This is God's finger," because no one is like the LORD. People brought little children to Jesus, and He said, "Let the little children come to me," and He laid His hands on them and prayed. A rich young man went away sad because he loved his riches more than following Jesus. But Jesus said that with God, all things are possible. Jesus, the King of glory in this day's psalm, welcomes children to come to Him.
It points to Jesus
Jesus is the King of glory who has rightful claim over every life and every treasure. He does what human effort cannot do by making the impossible possible with God.
