Today’s story
Daniel explains the dream, and his friends refuse to worship the golden image. God meets them in the fire.
Use God's gifts to serve, do not be surprised by suffering, and entrust yourself to the faithful Creator. Elders shepherd humbly.
God's Word gives hope when suffering feels long.
Oppression and greed destroy leadership.
The story in children’s words
Daniel told the king his dream: a huge statue with a head of gold, chest of silver, belly of bronze, legs of iron, and feet of iron mixed with clay. Then a stone, cut out without hands, struck the statue, smashed it to dust, and grew into a great mountain that filled the whole earth. The statue stood for kingdoms that would rise and fall, but the stone was God's kingdom, which will never be destroyed and will stand forever. The king bowed down and said Daniel's God is the God of gods, and he made Daniel a great ruler. Then the king built a huge golden statue and commanded everyone to bow down to it when the music played — or be thrown into a blazing furnace. Daniel's three friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, would not bow. "Our God is able to save us," they said, "but even if He does not, we will not serve your gods." In the furnace, the king saw not three men but four, walking unhurt in the fire! The three came out without even the smell of smoke on them. Peter says not to be surprised by fiery trials, but to rejoice, because we share in Christ's sufferings. The stone that grows into a mountain is God's forever kingdom, and Jesus is its King — and He walks with His friends even in the fire.
It points to Jesus
The fourth figure in the furnace reminds us that God is present with His people in trial. Jesus entered suffering and remains with us.
