Today’s story

Daniel and his friends live faithfully in exile. God gives wisdom and reveals Nebuchadnezzar's dream of kingdoms that will give way to God's everlasting kingdom.

Christ's suffering shapes how believers respond to hostility: with blessing, love, prayer, service, and readiness to explain their hope.

God's instruction is good and trustworthy.

Reverence for God keeps the heart tender.

The story in children’s words

King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took Jerusalem and carried away some of its young men to serve in his palace. Among them were Daniel and his three friends, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. The king wanted them to eat his rich food and drink his wine, but Daniel made up his mind not to disobey God, and he asked for vegetables and water instead. After ten days, Daniel and his friends looked healthier than all the others! God gave the four friends great learning and wisdom, and the king found them ten times wiser than all his wise men. Then the king had a troubling dream and demanded that his wise men tell him the dream itself — something no one could do — and he ordered them all to be killed. Daniel and his friends prayed to the God of heaven, and in the night God showed Daniel the secret. Daniel sang, "Blessed be God's name forever! He gives wisdom, and light lives with Him." Peter teaches us to answer evil with blessing, to be ready to explain our hope with gentleness, and he reminds us that Christ suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God. Daniel's God, who answers prayer in the dark night, is the same God who sent Jesus to bring us home.

It points to Jesus

Daniel's exile and Peter's teaching remind us that God's people can live faithfully in a culture that does not share their allegiance. Jesus is our true King.
