Today’s story

A river flows from God's sanctuary bringing life wherever it goes. The land is restored and the book ends with the city named, 'The LORD Is There.'

Peter calls believers to honorable lives, Christlike submission, faithful relationships, and following Jesus' example in suffering.

God's promises comfort us in affliction.

Hidden sin must be confessed and forsaken to find mercy.

The story in children’s words

Water was flowing out from under the door of God's temple! Ezekiel waded in, and the water rose — to his ankles, then his knees, then his waist — until it became a river too deep to cross, a river for swimming. Wherever the river flowed, everything lived: the salty sea turned fresh, fish swarmed in great numbers, and trees grew on both banks with fruit every month and leaves for healing. Then the land was shared out fairly among the twelve tribes, and even strangers living among them received a share. The new city had twelve gates named for the tribes, and its beautiful new name was "The LORD is there." Peter teaches us to live good lives among people who do not know God, and to endure hard treatment patiently, the way Jesus did. Jesus bore our sins in His own body on the tree, and by His wounds we are healed; we were lost sheep, but now we have come back to the Shepherd. Jesus is the Shepherd and the river of life both — wherever He flows, dead things come alive.

It points to Jesus

Ezekiel's life-giving river points toward God's final restoration. Jesus is the source of living water and teaches His people to live honorably in the world.
