Today’s story
Belshazzar treats holy things with contempt. The writing on the wall announces that his kingdom has been weighed and found wanting.
False teachers exploit people and deny truth. Peter warns that judgment is real and greed destroys.
God's testimonies are a secure inheritance.
Diligent work is wiser than chasing fantasies.
The story in children’s words
King Belshazzar held a great feast for a thousand of his lords. He brought out the gold cups that had been taken from God's temple in Jerusalem, and he and his guests drank from them while praising gods of gold, silver, wood, and stone. Suddenly, the fingers of a hand appeared and wrote on the wall! The king's face turned pale, and his knees knocked together. None of his wise men could read the words, so Daniel was called. Daniel bravely read the writing: "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN" — "God has counted your kingdom and ended it. You have been weighed and found wanting. Your kingdom is divided and given to others." Belshazzar had known how God humbled Nebuchadnezzar, but he had not humbled his own heart. That very night, Belshazzar was killed, and Darius the Mede took the kingdom. Peter warns about false teachers who tell smooth lies and lead people astray, and he reminds us that God knows how to rescue the godly, like Noah and Lot, and how to judge the wicked. God's scales never lie — but Jesus took our place, so those who trust in Him are not found wanting.
It points to Jesus
False teachers promise freedom while becoming slaves to corruption. Jesus is the truth who actually sets people free.
