Today’s story

Zephaniah warns of the day of the Lord but ends with restoration: God gathers His people and rejoices over them with love.

John receives the little scroll and eats it - sweet in his mouth, bitter in his stomach. God’s Word must be received before it is proclaimed.

David praises God for answering prayer, strengthening him, and completing His purpose. Proverb Summary Arrogance shows itself in contempt for parents, self-righteousness, pride, and cruelty toward the vulnerable. Discover Jesus

Jesus gives His servants a message that is both sweet and costly. The God who judges sin also gathers His people and delights in them. Reflect Am I willing to receive all of God’s Word, including the parts that correct me? Fellowship Discuss why Scripture can be both comforting and uncomfortable.

The story in children’s words

Zephaniah warned that the great day of the LORD was near, a dark and sad day for people who bowed to idols and stopped looking for God. He called the humble to look for the LORD and do what is right, so they might be hidden and safe on that day. Proud cities would fall, and Nineveh would sit empty. But the book ends with singing. God told Jerusalem, "Do not be afraid. The LORD your God is with you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with singing." God would gather His scattered people and bring them home. Then John saw a mighty angel with a little book, and John ate it; it was sweet as honey in his mouth but bitter in his belly. God's words are sweet and true, and the God who sings over His people sent them through Jesus.
