The story in children’s words
While Moses was on the mountain, the people grew tired of waiting. They asked Aaron to make them a god, so he made a calf out of their gold earrings, and they worshiped it. God was angry, but Moses begged Him to forgive the people, and God listened. Moses broke the stone tablets, ground the calf to powder, and prayed for the people again. God told Moses, "My presence will go with you." Moses asked to see God's glory, and God kept him safe in a crack of the rock as He passed by. That same night, Peter said three times that he did not know Jesus, just as Jesus had said. Jesus stood before the governor and stayed quiet and calm. Jesus took our place, even when His friends let Him down.
It points to Jesus
Today's readings are filled with human failure. Israel worships an idol. Peter denies Jesus. Judas betrays Him. Religious leaders falsely accuse Him. Yet Jesus remains faithful. Like Moses interceding for Israel, Jesus stands between sinful people and a holy God - but Jesus does far more. He gives His own life to save us. Our failures do not change who Jesus is. He is the faithful Savior we desperately need.
Talk about it
Ask one another: How should knowing that Jesus remains faithful change the way we respond when we fail?
