The story in children’s words

God told Moses to cut two new stone tablets, and He wrote His words on them again. God passed by Moses and called out His name: "The LORD, a kind and merciful God, slow to get angry, full of love." Moses' face shone brightly after being with God, so he covered it with a cloth. God forgave His people and made His promise with them again. The people gladly brought gold, cloth, and wood to build God's tent. At that time, the governor offered to free one prisoner, and the crowd chose a man named Barabbas instead of Jesus. The soldiers mocked Jesus, put a crown of thorns on His head, and led Him away. Jesus, the innocent One, was treated badly so that guilty people like us could go free.

It points to Jesus

Israel deserves judgment, but God shows mercy. Barabbas deserves punishment, but Jesus takes his place. That is a picture of the Gospel. The guilty man goes free while the innocent Jesus is condemned. We are like Barabbas. Jesus took the judgment our sin deserved so we could receive mercy. The crown of thorns points to the King who came to save us.

Talk about it

Ask one another: What does it mean personally that Jesus took our place?
