The story in children’s words

God gave rules about sickness in the body, and people who were unclean washed in water and waited until evening to be clean again. Then came the most special day of the year, the Day of Cleansing. Once a year, the high priest put on plain white clothes and went alone behind the thick curtain, into the most holy place, to ask God to forgive all the people's sins. Two goats were brought. One was offered to God, and the priest put his hands on the other goat and sent it far away into the desert, carrying the people's sins away with it. Jesus taught that people are not made unclean by dirty hands or by food. He said the bad things that come out of our hearts, like lies and mean thoughts, are what make us unclean. Only Jesus can wash our hearts clean.
