August Introduction

Through The Questions

Christ Our Wisdom, Hope, and Redeemer Days 213–243 — August 1–31

Soli Deo Gloria — For the Glory of God Alone

Welcome to August. If you have been walking with us since January, keep going. If you are joining us today, come along. You do not need to catch up before you can begin. Open God’s Word first, read today’s passages, and let this Companion walk beside you. July showed us grace that holds. August now takes that grace into some of life’s deepest questions. We move from the ruins of Judah into restoration through Ezra and Nehemiah. We watch Esther step into danger while God’s providence works even when His name seems hidden. Then Job brings us face-to-face with suffering, confusion, grief, and the aching question human beings have asked for generations: Where is God when life hurts and we do not understand? At the same time, Paul leads us through 1 Corinthians and into 2 Corinthians. A divided church is called back to the cross. Human wisdom bows before God’s wisdom. Spiritual gifts bow before love. Death bows before resurrection. Weakness becomes a place where Christ’s power is seen. Suffering becomes a place where God’s comfort can overflow to another person. And reconciliation becomes possible because God acts in Christ to bring sinners home. August will not give us a neat answer to every question. Scripture does something better: it keeps bringing us to the One we can trust when answers are incomplete. The heartbeat is simple: Christ our Wisdom. Christ our Hope. Christ our Redeemer.

Father — Son — Holy Spirit: Relationship in the Middle of the Questions The relational foundation continues. The Father restores His people, hears their cries, preserves His promises, comforts the suffering, and remains present even when His hand is difficult to see. The Son is the wisdom and power of God, the crucified and risen Lord, the head of His body, the living Redeemer, and the One through whom we are reconciled to God. The Holy Spirit reveals the things of God, gives gifts for the good of the body, makes believers His temple, writes the new covenant upon hearts, and transforms us from the inside out. So our rhythm remains: Father — Son — Holy Spirit — relationship with God — relationship with one another — invitation to the world. That relationship matters especially when life hurts. Faith is not pretending that suffering is easy. Job refuses shallow explanations. The Psalms cry honestly. Paul speaks openly about affliction. Yet Scripture keeps showing us that pain does not mean abandonment. The Father of compassion draws near. Jesus has entered suffering Himself. The Spirit is at work even in fragile people. And suffering does not isolate us from one another. The comfort we receive becomes comfort we can share. The gifts we receive are given for the body. Love becomes the more excellent way. Grace teaches us to rebuild together, forgive, serve, bear burdens, and become ambassadors of reconciliation. Rebuilding What Has Been Broken Ezra and Nehemiah remind us that restoration is rarely instant. A Temple is rebuilt. Walls rise stone by stone. God’s Word is read again. Sin is confessed. Worship is restored. Opposition comes from outside, and selfishness appears inside. Yet God keeps forming a people who belong to Him. This is more than ancient construction. We all know something about broken places — in a life, a family, a friendship, a church, or a dream. Jesus does not merely improve the outside. He becomes the foundation and begins rebuilding from the heart outward. Esther then reminds us that God may be working even when we cannot see Him clearly. His name is famously absent from the book, but His providence is not. Courage and faithfulness matter precisely because we do not always see the entire plan.

When Suffering Has No Easy Formula Job is one of the Bible’s great protections against shallow faith. Job’s friends want suffering to fit a simple formula: good people prosper and bad people suffer. But Job’s life will not fit their explanation. He grieves, protests, questions, remembers, longs, and waits. Then, in the middle of anguish, hope breaks through: Job knows that his Redeemer lives. He cannot see how the story will resolve, but he reaches toward the living God. By the end, God does not hand Job a tidy chart explaining every loss. He reveals Himself. That distinction is vital. Sometimes we want an explanation when what we most need is the presence of God. Jesus does not promise that His followers will understand every why in this life. He promises Himself. The crucified Savior knows suffering. The risen Savior has defeated death. Because our Redeemer lives, pain never receives the final word. The Cross, Love, Resurrection, and Reconciliation Corinthians keeps pulling us back to Jesus. The cross exposes the emptiness of human pride. The church is one body, so no believer is unnecessary and no gift is meant for self-glory. Love is not an optional decoration on Christian life; without love even impressive spirituality becomes empty noise. Then comes resurrection. If Christ has not been raised, faith collapses. But Christ has been raised. Death is not the end. That resurrection hope gives courage to people living in fragile bodies and uncertain circumstances. In 2 Corinthians, Paul shows us another mystery of grace: God places His treasure in jars of clay. Weakness does not disqualify us from being used by God. Christ can make His power visible through people who know they are dependent upon Him. And He gives His people a ministry of reconciliation — carrying the message that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself. Keep the Rhythm Read Scripture first. Read or listen to all four assigned passages before using the Companion. Ask honest questions. August gives permission to bring confusion, grief, fear, and uncertainty before God rather than hiding them. Discover Jesus. Watch for Him as Wisdom, Foundation, Redeemer, risen Lord, Head of the church, Comforter of sufferers, and Reconciler. Notice the Holy Spirit. Watch how the Spirit reveals truth, gives gifts, dwells in believers, creates freedom, and transforms hearts. Reflect and fellowship. Share both what strengthened you and what you still do not understand. Ask one another, Where did you see Jesus? Live today. Rebuild one broken place. Encourage one hurting person. Forgive. Serve. Love. Take the next faithful step.

Prayer

Father, when life is clear, keep us grateful. When life is confusing, keep us near. Lord Jesus, You are the wisdom of God, our risen Lord, and our living Redeemer. Thank You for entering suffering, conquering death, and reconciling us to God. Holy Spirit, open our hearts to see Christ in all of Scripture. Give us courage to rebuild, humility to listen, love that serves, and faith that remains when answers do not come. Comfort us so we can comfort others. Transform us from the inside out. Make our lives living evidence that our Redeemer lives. For the glory of God alone. Amen. Read the Word. Understand the Word. See Jesus in the Word. Live the Word. It ALL Points to Jesus.

September opens with Ecclesiastes asking what lasts, while 2 Corinthians continues to show the grace, holiness, and strength found in Christ.

August Review - The Big Story

From Ruins to Redemption August began among ruins. Judah had fallen, yet God had not forgotten His promise. He brought His people home, rebuilt the Temple, restored Jerusalem’s walls, and renewed attention to His Word. Esther then showed that even when God seems hidden, His providence is still at work. Then the road entered suffering. Job lost what he could not replace and asked questions he could not answer. His friends offered formulas, but Job needed more than a formula. He needed God. In the middle of his anguish came one of the month’s great declarations: his Redeemer lives. Corinthians keeps bringing the whole month into focus. Human wisdom bows before the cross. Division bows before the one body of Christ. Gifts bow before love. Death bows before resurrection. Weakness becomes a place for God’s power. Suffering becomes a place where God’s comfort can overflow to others. And reconciliation becomes possible because of Jesus. By the end of Job, God has not handed Job a neat explanation for every pain. He has given Job a greater vision of Himself. Then Paul gives us the gospel conclusion: in Christ we are a new creation, and God has reconciled us to Himself. August teaches us that faith does not mean having every answer. Faith means knowing the One who holds us when answers do not come. Finding Jesus This Month Jesus is the true King, the foundation, the wisdom of God, the head of the church, the way of love, the risen Lord, the living Redeemer, the comfort of sufferers, the giver of the Spirit, and the One who reconciles us to God. Reflect Together Where did August deepen your trust in Jesus? Which truth about suffering, resurrection, love, or reconciliation do you most need to carry into September?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, when I understand, keep me humble. When I do not understand, keep me faithful. Thank You that You live, You reign, and You hold me. Transform my heart so that my life reflects You more each day. Amen.

September Preview

September begins in Ecclesiastes, where Scripture asks what gives life lasting meaning. The search will move through wisdom and the words of Paul, but the answer will keep drawing us beyond life ‘under the sun’ to the One who gives eternal life. Read, read some more, and keep reading until you see Jesus face-to-face.
