God at Work Through Imperfect People

Soli Deo Gloria — For the Glory of God Alone

May Introduction - The King We Need

April brought us to the cross and the empty tomb. May begins with the risen Jesus still before us, but the Old Testament turns our attention to a painful question: What happens when people live without a faithful king? Judges answers with disorder. Again and again God’s people forget Him, follow what seems right in their own eyes, suffer the consequences, cry out, and need rescue. Even the judges God raises are limited and imperfect. The pattern leaves us longing for more than another temporary deliverer. Then Ruth gives us a quieter picture. In the middle of national instability, ordinary faithfulness matters. A widow chooses covenant loyalty. A kinsman-redeemer acts with kindness and integrity. God works through everyday obedience to move His redemptive story forward. Ruth’s family line will lead to David — and beyond David to Jesus. First Samuel then shows Israel asking for a king. Saul looks impressive, but appearance cannot produce obedience. David is chosen because God sees the heart. Yet even David, the man after God’s own heart, will need grace. Human kings can point forward, but none can carry the full weight of our hope. At the same time, John’s Gospel keeps placing Jesus before us in unmistakable language. He is the Lamb of God, the Son of God, the giver of new birth, living water, the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection and the Life, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The Old Testament makes us ask, ‘Who can truly lead and save us?’ John answers: Jesus.

Father — Son — Holy Spirit: The Relationship at the Center

May keeps the relational foundation alive. The Father sends the Son and draws people to Him. Jesus speaks what He has heard from the Father, does the Father’s works, and reveals the Father’s heart. The Holy Spirit gives life, teaches, reminds, convicts, comforts, and makes Christ known. This means we are not merely studying leadership failures in Judges and Samuel or collecting titles for Jesus in John. We are being invited into relationship with the living God. The Father brings us near through the Son. The Son gives Himself so we may belong to God. The Holy Spirit forms the life of Christ within us. And that relationship always moves outward. If Jesus is our King, His rule reaches our homes, our speech, our decisions, our forgiveness, our generosity, and the way we treat one another. The question is not only, ‘Do I believe Jesus is King?’ It is also, ‘Where is His rule becoming visible in my life today?’

The Great Contrast of May

Judges: Everyone does what is right in his own eyes. Jesus: ‘My sheep hear my voice.’ Saul: Looks strong but repeatedly resists God’s word. Jesus: Obeys the Father perfectly. David: Chosen, courageous, loved by God — yet still a sinner who needs mercy. Jesus: The greater Son of David, righteous and without sin. Earthly rulers: Temporary, fragile, and mixed. Jesus: The Shepherd-King who lays down His life for the sheep and rises again.

Keep the Rhythm

Read First. Open the Bible before the Companion. Read or listen to the assigned Scripture. Let God’s Word have the first word. Understand. Ask what is happening, what it reveals about God and the human heart, and where it fits in the larger story. Discover Jesus. Look for Christ faithfully — through promise, pattern, contrast, fulfillment, and the direct testimony of the New Testament. Reflect. Ask what the Holy Spirit is exposing, encouraging, correcting, or strengthening in you. Fellowship. Share what you are seeing. Ask one another, ‘Where did you see Jesus?’ Pray and Live. Let the Word become obedience. One faithful act today is better than a page of good intentions.

Prayer

Father, thank You for never abandoning Your people when human leaders fail. Lord Jesus, rule our hearts as the true King, Shepherd, Redeemer, and risen Lord. Holy Spirit, open our eyes to the Word, expose every false confidence, and form Christ in us. Teach us to listen, obey, love one another, and live under the gracious rule of Jesus. Amen. Read the Word. Understand the Word. See Jesus in the Word. Live the Word. It ALL Points to Jesus.

May Monthly Review — The King We Need

The Big Story

May began in the chaos of Judges, where God’s people repeatedly lived as though they could become their own authority. Ruth then showed that quiet covenant faithfulness still mattered. First Samuel introduced Hannah, Samuel, Saul, Jonathan, and David. Israel wanted a king who looked strong; God kept exposing the limits of outward strength. Saul’s fear and disobedience eventually destroyed his reign. David was chosen, trusted God against Goliath, showed mercy to Saul, received God’s covenant promise, and became king — yet David also sinned terribly and needed forgiveness. The Old Testament leaves us longing for a King whose heart will never turn away. John’s Gospel answered that longing by revealing Jesus with increasing clarity. He is the Lamb of God, the giver of new birth, living water, the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the eternal I AM, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection and the Life, the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and the true Vine. He promises the Holy Spirit, prays for His people, stands firm when arrested, and goes willingly to the cross. May ends with Jesus dead and buried — but we already know the grave will not have the final word.

Finding Jesus This Month

• The Lamb of God — He deals with sin at its root.
• The giver of new birth and living water — He makes us new and satisfies the soul.
• The Bread of Life — He is not merely a provider; He is our true nourishment.
• The Light of the World — He exposes darkness and leads us into life.
• The eternal I AM — Jesus is more than a human teacher or ruler.
• The Good Shepherd — He knows His sheep and lays down His life for them.
• The Resurrection and the Life — death itself answers to Him.
• The Servant King — He washes feet rather than grasping status.
• The Way to the Father — relationship with God comes through Him.
• The true Vine — fruitful life comes from abiding in Christ.
• The King on the cross — rejected by men, yet accomplishing our salvation.

The Relational Heartbeat

The Father sends, speaks, loves, and draws. The Son reveals the Father, obeys Him perfectly, gives Himself for the sheep, and makes the way home. The Holy Spirit gives life, teaches truth, reminds us of Jesus, convicts us, comforts us, and forms Christ in us. The result is relationship with God that changes relationship with one another: we listen, serve, forgive, tell the truth, refuse revenge, receive correction, and love as Jesus loved.

Reflect Together

1. Where did May help you see the difference between human leadership and the kingship of Jesus? 2. Which title of Jesus in John became most personal to you this month? 3. Where did Saul or David expose a weakness you recognize in yourself? 4. How have you seen the Holy Spirit use Scripture to correct or encourage you? 5. What one change will Jesus see you carrying into June?

May Prayer

Father, thank You for Your faithfulness when human leaders fail. Lord Jesus, You are the King we need — our Lamb, Bread, Light, Shepherd, Resurrection, Way, Truth, Life, and Vine. Thank You for giving Yourself at the cross. Holy Spirit, keep opening our hearts to Scripture. Rule our choices, heal our relationships, expose our pride, and make our lives reflect Christ. Amen.

June Preview — Kingdom, Worship, And The Faithfulness Of God

June opens with the resurrection of Jesus and the birth of the church in Acts. The risen Lord commissions His followers, ascends, pours out the Holy Spirit, and sends ordinary believers into the world with the gospel. At the same time, 2 Samuel continues David’s story and then moves toward Solomon and the kingdom. We will see both the beauty and danger of human rule, the importance of worship, and God’s covenant faithfulness even when His people fail. May asked, ‘Who is the King we need?’ June begins answering what happens when the risen King gives His Spirit to His people. The church does not move forward by human strength alone. The Father keeps His promises. Jesus reigns. The Holy Spirit empowers witness, courage, fellowship, generosity, holiness, and mission. As June begins, keep the rhythm simple: Read Scripture first. Ask the Holy Spirit for understanding. Look for Jesus. Share what you see. Pray. Live it. And when you miss a day, begin again. Read, read some more, and keep reading until you see Jesus face-to-face. It ALL Points to Jesus.
