Today’s story

Jacob flees, encounters God at Bethel, and receives covenant promises he did not earn. In Haran, his love for Rachel begins amid the tangled beginnings of a family through whom God will build Israel.

Jesus raises a girl, heals a woman, opens blind eyes, and sends his disciples to pray for laborers because the harvest is plentiful. Compassion and mission flow together in the heart of Christ.

The righteous find refuge in the Lord even when foundations seem shaken. God remains on his throne when earthly stability collapses.

The Lord’s discipline is a sign of his love, not his rejection. Correction is one of the Father’s gifts to those he claims as his own.

The story in children’s words

Jacob traveled far away and slept outside with a stone for a pillow. In a dream, he saw a stairway reaching from earth to heaven, with angels going up and down. God promised Jacob the land, many children, and His nearness wherever he went. Jacob met Rachel at a well and worked seven years to marry her, but her father tricked him and gave him Leah first. God saw that Leah was not loved, and He gave her sons, and one was named Judah. Jesus raised a ruler's daughter back to life and healed a sick woman who only touched His clothes. From Judah's family line, Jesus would one day come, bringing life and healing to many.

It points to Jesus

Jesus is the ladder between heaven and earth in whom God comes near to undeserving people. He is also the compassionate Shepherd who sees crowds as helpless sheep and acts to save.
