Day 130 · May 10
Kids Corner — Day 130
1 Samuel 8:1–9:27 · John 6:22–42 · Psalm 106:32–48 · Proverbs 14:34–35
Today’s story
Israel demands a king like the nations. God warns them that human kings will take, yet He allows their request and Saul is introduced.
Jesus tells the crowd not to live for food that perishes. He is the Bread of Life sent from the Father.
Israel repeatedly provokes God, yet He remembers His covenant and shows mercy.
Righteousness exalts a people; sin brings disgrace.
The story in children’s words
When Samuel grew old, his sons did not walk in his ways, and they took bribes and judged unfairly. So the elders of Israel asked Samuel for a king, like the other nations had. Samuel prayed, and God said they were not rejecting Samuel, but rejecting God as their King. Samuel warned them that a king would take their sons, their daughters, and their fields, but the people still cried, "Give us a king!" Then a tall young man named Saul came looking for his father's lost donkeys. God told Samuel that this was the man who would rule His people, and Samuel welcomed Saul and told him the donkeys had been found. In Jesus' day, crowds followed Jesus because He had fed them, but Jesus said, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry." The people wanted a king who would give them bread, but Jesus Himself is the true bread God sent down from heaven.
It points to Jesus
Israel wants a visible king to make them secure. Jesus offers something deeper: Himself, the Bread from heaven.
Talk about it
Discuss the difference between wanting God's gifts and wanting God Himself.
