Day 134 · May 14
Kids Corner — Day 134
1 Samuel 15:1–16:23 · John 8:1–20 · Psalm 110:1–7 · Proverbs 15:8–10
Today’s story
Saul's partial obedience is exposed as disobedience. God chooses David and looks at the heart rather than outward appearance.
Jesus extends mercy to a condemned woman and declares, 'I am the light of the world.'
Psalm 110 looks toward the LORD's anointed King and priest who reigns in victory.
God values the prayer of the upright more than empty religious performance.
The story in children’s words
God told Saul to completely defeat the Amalekites, but Saul spared their king Agag and kept the best sheep and cattle. Samuel came and asked why he could hear sheep bleating if Saul had obeyed. Samuel said that obeying God is better than sacrifice, and that because Saul had rejected God's word, God had rejected him as king. Then God sent Samuel to Bethlehem, to the house of Jesse, and Samuel anointed Jesse's youngest son, David, and God's Spirit came on David from that day on. David was brought to play music for Saul and to help him when he was troubled. In Jesus' day, leaders brought a woman caught in sin and wanted to stone her, but Jesus said, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone," and they all went away. Jesus told her He did not condemn her, and said, "Go, and sin no more." Then He said, "I am the light of the world." Jesus, David's greater Son, is both merciful and holy, and He lights the way for us.
It points to Jesus
Saul shows that outward appearance and religious language can hide rebellion. Jesus brings sin into the light and offers mercy that leads to a new way of life.
