Day 137 · May 17
Kids Corner — Day 137
1 Samuel 20:1–21:15 · John 9:1–41 · Psalm 113:1–114:8 · Proverbs 15:15–17
Today’s story
Jonathan protects David at great personal cost, and David begins life as a fugitive.
Jesus heals a man born blind. Religious leaders refuse the evidence, while the healed man grows in understanding and worship.
The LORD lifts the poor and brought Israel out of Egypt with power.
Better a little with the fear of the LORD and love than abundance with turmoil.
The story in children’s words
Jonathan promised to find out whether his father Saul truly meant to harm David. He told David to hide in the field, and he would shoot arrows as a secret sign. At the king's table, Saul became furious when David's seat was empty, and he even threw his spear at Jonathan. So Jonathan shot the arrows beyond the hiding place, which meant David must flee. The two friends wept, kissed each other, and promised kindness forever, and David went away. David came to the priest Ahimelech, who gave him holy bread and the sword of Goliath, and David had to run far away, even pretending to be mad before a foreign king to stay safe. In Jesus' day, Jesus healed a man who had been blind from birth by putting mud on his eyes and telling him to wash. The man came back seeing, and even though the leaders argued and questioned him, he said, "One thing I do know: though I was blind, now I see." Jesus is the light of the world, who opens blind eyes and stands by His friends in trouble.
It points to Jesus
Jonathan sees what Saul refuses to see; the healed man sees what the leaders will not. Jesus opens more than physical eyes.
