Day 138 · May 18
Kids Corner — Day 138
1 Samuel 22:1–23:29 · John 10:1–21 · Psalm 115:1–18 · Proverbs 15:18–19
Today’s story
David gathers distressed people around him while Saul's rage leads to the slaughter of priests. David repeatedly seeks God's direction.
Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep and lays down His life for them.
Not to us, but to God's name be glory; idols cannot speak, see, hear, or save.
A hot temper stirs conflict; the wise make the path easier.
The story in children’s words
David hid in a cave, and about four hundred men who were in trouble or in debt gathered to him, and he became their captain. He kept his father and mother safe with the king of Moab. But Saul, in his anger, ordered the priests of the Lord at Nob to be killed because Ahimelech had helped David, and only one priest, Abiathar, escaped to David. David was very sorry and promised to protect him. Later David asked God for help and saved the city of Keilah from the Philistines. When Saul came hunting for him in the wilderness, Jonathan found David and encouraged him, saying God would make him king and Saul's hand would not find him. In Jesus' day, Jesus said, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." He said His sheep hear His voice and follow Him, and that He came so they may have life in full. David gathered the hurting people to himself, and Jesus, the Good Shepherd, gathers us and lays down His life for us.
It points to Jesus
Saul uses people to protect himself. Jesus lays down His life to protect His sheep. This is the King we need.
Talk about it
Ask someone: What helps you recognize the Shepherd's voice?
