Today’s story

David refuses to kill Saul when given the opportunity. Abigail's wisdom later prevents David from taking revenge into his own hands.

Jesus says His sheep hear His voice and no one can snatch them from His hand.

The psalmist loves the LORD who hears prayer and delivers from death.

Wisdom brings joy; foolishness despises those who gave instruction.

The story in children’s words

Saul came into a cave to rest, not knowing David and his men were hiding deep inside it. David crept close and quietly cut off a corner of Saul's robe, but his heart troubled him even for doing that. Outside, David showed Saul the piece of cloth and said he would never stretch out his hand against the Lord's anointed king. Saul wept and said David was more righteous than he was, and that he knew David would surely be king. Later, Samuel died, and all Israel mourned for him. Then a rich but foolish man named Nabal refused to help David's men, but his wise wife Abigail hurried out with food and spoke kindly and wisely, and David's anger cooled. Nabal died, and Abigail became David's wife. In Jesus' day, Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give eternal life to them, and no one will snatch them out of my hand." David spared the king who hunted him, and Jesus keeps His sheep safe forever in His strong hand.

It points to Jesus

David learns to leave judgment with God. Jesus gives His sheep security that frees us from revenge and panic.
