Today’s story
David's family begins to fracture through lust, violence, revenge, and grief. Sin spreads beyond the original act.
Jesus prays for His disciples and for future believers, asking the Father to keep them, sanctify them in truth, and make them one.
The psalmist waits for God's promise even while suffering.
Steadfast love and faithfulness turn from evil; walking with God changes relationships.
The story in children’s words
Sadness came into David's own family, just as Nathan had warned. David's son Amnon did a great wrong to his sister Tamar, and he sent her away in shame, and Tamar lived desolate in her brother Absalom's house. King David heard about it and was very angry. Absalom said nothing good or bad to Amnon, but he hated him in his heart. After two full years, Absalom had Amnon killed at a feast, and then Absalom fled far away to another land and stayed there three years. David's heart longed to go out to his son Absalom. Sin in the family had brought deep pain to everyone. In Jesus' day, Jesus prayed a long prayer for His disciples and for everyone who would believe in Him through their words. He prayed that they would all be one, kept safe in the Father's name, and filled with His joy. He prayed, "Sanctify them in your truth. Your word is truth." David's family was broken by sin, but Jesus prays for His family — even for us — that we may be one and safe in God.
It points to Jesus
David's house breaks apart; Jesus prays for a new family held together by truth, holiness, love, and unity with the Father.
