Day 170 · June 17
Kids Corner — Day 170
1 Kings 20:1–21:29 · Acts 12:24–13:15 · Psalm 137:1–9 · Proverbs 17:16
Today’s story
Ahab repeatedly sees God’s power yet refuses wholehearted obedience. Naboth’s vineyard exposes the cruelty produced when rulers treat God’s law as optional.
The Word of God keeps spreading. The Holy Spirit sets apart Barnabas and Saul, and the church sends them. Mission begins in worship, prayer, and obedience.
Exile produces grief and longing. Sin has real consequences, and God’s people ache for home.
Wisdom is not something we can purchase while refusing to seek God.
The story in children’s words
Syria's king Ben Hadad attacked Samaria with a huge army, but God gave little Israel the victory twice, so everyone would know that He is the LORD of the hills and of the valleys too. Ahab let Ben Hadad go free, and a prophet told him he had done wrong. Soon Ahab wanted the vineyard of a man named Naboth, but Naboth would not sell the land of his fathers. Ahab went home sulking and would not eat. Wicked Jezebel wrote letters that told lies about Naboth, and Naboth was stoned to death. Then Elijah met Ahab in the stolen vineyard and told him God's judgment was coming. When Ahab humbled himself in sackcloth, God mercifully said the disaster would not come in Ahab's own days. Meanwhile, God's word grew and spread. In Antioch the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart Barnabas and Saul for the work I have called them to," and the church prayed, laid hands on them, and sent them out. On the island of Cyprus, a sorcerer tried to turn the ruler away from the faith, but Paul, full of the Holy Spirit, spoke God's word, the sorcerer went blind for a while, and the ruler believed in Jesus.
It points to Jesus
Ahab grasps for what is not his; Jesus gives Himself for others. While kings misuse power, the Spirit sends servants to give away the gospel.
Talk about it
Share one place in today’s reading where you saw Jesus more clearly. Then discuss the reflection question together.
