Today’s story

Israel returns from exile, but Saul’s story ends in tragedy because of persistent unfaithfulness.

The ship is lost, but every person survives just as God promised. Paul becomes a calm voice of faith in chaos.

Human beings seem small beneath creation, yet God gives them dignity and responsibility.

True friendship can be closer than family.

The story in children’s words

God's people had been carried away to Babylon because they disobeyed God, and this reading names the families who lived in Jerusalem, with the priests and gatekeepers of God's house. It also tells the sad end of King Saul, who fell in battle with the Philistines after turning away from God. On the stormy sea, Paul stood up and told everyone on the ship to cheer up. An angel of God had told him no lives would be lost, only the ship, because Paul must stand before Caesar. After fourteen days in the storm, Paul gave thanks to God and ate bread, and all 276 people on the ship reached the land safely. God kept His word, and He kept Paul safe to keep telling people about Jesus.

It points to Jesus

Saul shows the ruin of self-rule; Paul shows the steadiness of surrendered faith. Jesus is the faithful King we need.
