Today’s story

David’s victories are followed by the tragedy of his census. Pride and self-reliance bring suffering, yet mercy appears at the altar.

Paul shows that outward religious signs cannot replace inward faithfulness. Human unfaithfulness does not cancel God’s faithfulness.

The Lord remains righteous and secure when foundations shake.

Pride and foolishness do not belong with genuine wisdom.

The story in children’s words

David sent kind messengers to a new king whose father had died, but the king shamed them and cut their clothes and beards. So David's army went to battle, trusted God to do what seemed good to Him, and won. Later, Satan stirred David up to count his fighting men, and a terrible sickness fell on Israel because of it. David was sorry, bought a farmer's threshing floor, built an altar there, and God stopped the sickness and answered with fire from heaven. Paul wrote that being God's people is not only about outward signs, but about a heart changed by God's Spirit. He also said God is always true and faithful, even when people are not. Jesus is the proof of God's faithfulness, who changes our hearts from the inside.

It points to Jesus

David’s altar points toward our need for atonement. We cannot save ourselves by numbers, strength, heritage, or religion. We need grace fulfilled in Jesus.

Talk about it

Why are outward religious signs unable to change the heart?
