Today’s story

Joseph interprets Pharaoh’s dreams, is elevated to leadership, and begins storing grain for the famine. When his brothers arrive, the one they betrayed now holds the power to test and eventually save them.

Jesus compares the kingdom to seed, yeast, treasure, and a pearl of great price. God’s reign may begin quietly, but it is of immeasurable worth and unstoppable growth.

Psalm 18 opens in praise to the Lord as rock, fortress, and deliverer. God thunders on behalf of his servant and rescues from overwhelming danger.

A father calls his children to receive instruction and prize wisdom above everything else. True wisdom is both inherited and personally embraced.

The story in children’s words

Joseph told Pharaoh his dream meant seven good years of food, then seven hungry years with very little. Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of all Egypt, and Joseph stored up grain like the sand of the sea. When the hungry years came, people from every land came to Joseph for bread. Joseph's own brothers came and bowed down before him, just as his dreams had shown, but they did not know who he was. Jesus said God's kingdom is like a tiny mustard seed that grows into a big tree. He also said it is like a hidden treasure and a pearl so precious that a man sold all he had to buy it. Jesus Himself is that great treasure, worth more than everything else.

It points to Jesus

Joseph’s exaltation after suffering again foreshadows Christ, who is raised and enthroned to provide life for those who once rejected him. Jesus himself is the treasure worth surrendering everything to gain.
