Today’s story

Asa begins well, removes idols, and seeks God, but later relies on human power rather than the Lord. A strong beginning still requires continued trust.

Paul grieves for Israel and wrestles with God’s sovereign mercy and purpose.

Creation and Scripture both declare God’s glory and expose our need for cleansing.

Wine can deceive and master the person who treats it carelessly.

The story in children’s words

King Asa did what was good and right, cleaned the idols out of Judah, and told the people to seek the LORD. When an army of a million men came against him, Asa cried, "Help us, LORD, for we rely on You," and God gave him the victory. Asa and the people promised with all their hearts to seek God, and God gave them rest. But late in his life Asa paid a foreign king for help instead of trusting God, and he put God's messenger in prison when he was warned. Asa's feet became sick, and he did not seek the LORD, and he died. Paul wrote with great sorrow for his own people Israel, wishing he could help them know Christ. He said God is like a potter with clay, free to show mercy as He chooses — and God showed His mercy most of all in Jesus.

It points to Jesus

Asa’s story warns us not to outgrow dependence on God. Romans reminds us that salvation rests in God’s mercy, not human achievement. Jesus remains our only confidence.

Talk about it

Why can success make dependence on God harder?
