Today’s story

Uzziah’s strength turns into pride; Jotham grows strong by walking steadily with God; Ahaz chooses idolatry and brings ruin.

Believers are called to live responsibly, love their neighbors, and wake up spiritually because salvation is nearer than when we first believed.

The Lord is our Shepherd, provider, guide, protector, and host.

Even children reveal character through their actions.

The story in children’s words

Uzziah became king at sixteen and did what was right, and as long as he sought God, God made him strong and helped him win his battles. But when Uzziah grew proud, he went into God's house to burn incense himself, a job God gave only to the priests. Sickness broke out on his forehead right there, and he had to live apart until he died. His son Jotham did what was right and became mighty, but Jotham's son Ahaz did great evil, worshiped idols, and even shut the doors of God's house. Paul wrote that love sums up all God's commands: "Love your neighbor as yourself." He said the night is nearly over and the day is near, so we should put on the armor of light. Paul's own words for it are best: put on the Lord Jesus Christ.

It points to Jesus

Kings prove unreliable, but Psalm 23 gives us the Shepherd-King. Jesus leads His people through both green pastures and dark valleys.

Talk about it

What does it look like to let Jesus shepherd us through a dark valley?
