Today’s story
God judges covenant unfaithfulness yet promises to plant a tender shoot that becomes a majestic cedar - hope beyond human failure.
Jesus mediates a better covenant built on better promises - forgiveness and God's law written on hearts.
Human craving forgets God's goodness.
Wise friendship refreshes the heart.
The story in children’s words
God said Jerusalem had become even more sinful than the cities around her, and she had forgotten the days when God first loved her. But God made a wonderful promise at the end: "I will remember my promise. I will make a new promise that lasts forever, and I will forgive all that you have done." Then God told a riddle about two great eagles and a vine; it meant that the king broke his promise and would not escape. Last of all, God said He Himself would take a tiny tender twig from the top of a tall cedar and plant it on a high mountain. It would grow into a great tree, and birds of every kind would rest in its shade. The letter to the Hebrews tells of God's new covenant, where He writes His laws on our hearts and remembers our sins no more. That tender twig points to Jesus, the King God planted, whose kingdom gives shelter to people from every nation.
It points to Jesus
The better covenant is fulfilled in Jesus: forgiveness, transformed hearts, and real relationship with God.
