Today’s story
Powerful empires are pictured as fallen trees and defeated armies. Greatness without God does not last.
God's people pursue holiness and receive a Kingdom that cannot be shaken. Gratitude leads to reverent worship.
God lifts the lowly and shakes creation by His presence.
Care for what has been entrusted to you rather than chasing passing riches.
The story in children’s words
God told Pharaoh about a giant cedar tree in Lebanon, so tall and beautiful that birds nested in its branches and animals rested in its shade. The tree stood for Assyria, and for Egypt too: great and proud, until God cut it down, and it fell with a crash that shook the nations. Then Ezekiel sang a sad song as Egypt went down to the place of the dead, lying beside all the other proud nations that had fallen before her. The lesson is plain: no kingdom, however tall, can stand in pride against God. The letter to the Hebrews tells us we have not come to a scary, shaking mountain like the people long ago at Sinai. We have come to Mount Zion, the city of the living God, to angels beyond number, and to Jesus, the One who made the new promise. God will shake everything that can be shaken, but His kingdom can never be shaken. Let us thank God and worship Him, for Jesus gives us a kingdom that stands forever.
It points to Jesus
Everything shakeable will pass. Jesus gives an unshakeable Kingdom, so thanksgiving becomes worship.
