Today’s story

God promises to cleanse His people, give a new heart and spirit, and cause them to walk in His ways.

James teaches joy in trials, asks for wisdom, and reminds us that every good gift comes from the Father.

The psalmist loves the God who hears and rescues.

Know the condition of what God has entrusted to your care.

The story in children’s words

God spoke against Mount Seir, the land of Edom, because its people had hated Israel for a long time and rejoiced when Israel was in trouble. But then God turned to the mountains of Israel with wonderful promises. The empty land would be farmed again, the ruined cities would be built again, and the people would come home. Best of all, God said, "I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you. I will take away your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh, and I will put my Spirit in you." The land that was empty would become like the garden of Eden. James writes that hard times test our faith and make us strong and complete, and if we need wisdom, we can ask God, who gives freely. Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father above. The new heart God promised is His good gift to us, and Jesus, who died and rose, is the greatest gift of all.

It points to Jesus

God promises a new heart; James calls Him the Father of every good gift. In Jesus, the Father's generosity reaches us fully.
