Today’s story
The Lord descends on Sinai in fire, thunder, lightning, and trumpet sound, revealing His holiness. God gives the Ten Commandments and additional laws concerning justice and human life. He is forming a covenant people whose lives reflect His holy character.
Jesus gives solemn warnings against the scribes and Pharisees, exposing outward religion without inward faithfulness. He grieves over Jerusalem and longs to gather its people, revealing both God's justice and His deep compassion.
David calls on the Lord for mercy and strength and praises Him as the refuge and shepherd of His people. Proverb Summary God's wisdom is to be treasured and guarded. His Word protects from temptation and leads along the path of life. Discover Jesus At Sinai sinful people could not casually approach God's holy presence. Jesus is the greater Mediator of a new covenant. Through His death and resurrection, He opens the way to God. He perfectly fulfilled the law we could never keep and invites sinners to come to Him. Everything in today's reading points to Jesus. Reflect How does God's holiness deepen your appreciation for the grace found in Jesus? Where is God calling you to greater honesty, humility, and obedience? Fellowship Talk about what it means to approach God through Jesus rather than through our own efforts. Encourage one another to treasure God's Word.
The story in children’s words
God came down on Mount Sinai with thunder, lightning, and a loud trumpet, and the whole mountain shook and smoked. The people were afraid and stood far away. God gave Moses His ten good rules, like: worship only God, honor your father and mother, do not steal, and do not lie. These rules showed the people how to live as God's own family. Jesus warned about teachers who looked clean and good on the outside but were not kind or fair on the inside. He cried over the city of Jerusalem because its people would not come to Him. Jesus longs to gather us close, like a mother hen gathers her chicks under her wings.
