The story in children’s words
God put His Spirit on seventy elders, and they helped Moses lead the people. God sent quails for meat, but the people had wanted the meat in a greedy way, and many became sick. Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses, and Miriam became sick too, until Moses prayed and God healed her. Then Moses sent twelve men to look at the good land God promised. They brought back huge grapes and said the land was rich and good. But ten of the men were afraid of the strong people there. Only Caleb said, "We can do it, because God is with us." That night, Jesus shared bread and a cup with His friends and said the bread was His body and the cup was His blood. Then Jesus prayed in a garden while His friends fell asleep, and Judas led soldiers to take Him away. Jesus obeyed His Father all the way, even when it was very hard.
It points to Jesus
Today's readings bring us surprisingly close to the cross. Moses intercedes for Miriam after she attacks him. Jesus intercedes for sinners. Joshua and Caleb trust God when everyone else is afraid. Jesus trusts His Father completely - even in Gethsemane. Then Jesus gives His disciples the bread and cup. His body will be given. His blood will be poured out. And when the moment comes, Jesus prays: “Not My will, but Yours.” That is surrender. That is obedience. That is love. Everything is moving toward the cross.
Talk about it
Talk with someone about this: What does Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane teach us about trusting God when His way is difficult?
