The story in children’s words
The people cried all night because they were afraid to enter the good land. They even wanted to go back to Egypt. Joshua and Caleb begged them to trust God, but the people would not listen. Moses prayed for the people, and God forgave them. Still, because they would not trust Him, that grown-up generation would wander in the desert for forty years. Their children would be the ones to enter the land. Caleb and Joshua would enter too, because they trusted God fully. That night, Jesus was taken to the high priest, and men told lies about Him. When they asked if He was the Christ, the Son of God, Jesus said, "I am." Outside, Peter said three times that he did not know Jesus, and then he cried. Jesus told the truth even when it cost Him everything, because He came to save us.
It points to Jesus
Today's readings are filled with human failure. Israel does not trust God. The religious leaders reject Jesus. Peter denies Him. Psalm 53 reminds us that sin reaches all humanity. Then look at Jesus. While people fail around Him, Jesus remains faithful. Peter's denial is not the end of his story. After the resurrection, Jesus will restore him.
That is the Gospel. We do not come to Jesus because we have never failed. We come because we need a Savior.
Talk about it
Talk with someone about this: What does Peter's failure teach us about our need for Jesus?
