The story in children’s words
The people complained again on their journey, and biting snakes came among them. The people said sorry, and Moses prayed for them. God told Moses to put a bronze snake on a pole. Everyone who looked at it lived. Then God helped Israel win against King Sihon and King Og, and they took their land. King Balak was afraid and sent for a man named Balaam to curse Israel. But God said, "Do not curse them, for they are blessed." Long after, the angel Gabriel visited a young woman named Mary. He said she would have a son named Jesus, who would be the Son of God and a King forever. Mary believed and said, "Let it be done to me as you said." She sang a happy song to God, because nothing is impossible for God, and Jesus was coming at last.
It points to Jesus
Today we come to one of the clearest pictures of Jesus in Numbers. The Israelites have been bitten. They cannot heal themselves. God provides the remedy. Look and live. Jesus later explains: “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up.” The bronze serpent pointed forward to the cross. Sin has wounded us in a way we cannot cure ourselves. God's answer is Jesus. Then Luke announces His arrival. Look to Jesus and live.
Talk about it
Talk with someone about this: Why do you think Jesus used the bronze serpent to explain what He would accomplish on the cross?
