The story in children’s words
Balaam rode his donkey to meet King Balak. The donkey saw an angel with a sword standing in the road, but Balaam could not see him. The donkey turned away three times, and Balaam hit her. Then God let the donkey speak, and God opened Balaam's eyes to see the angel. The angel said Balaam could go, but he must only say what God told him. Balak wanted Balaam to curse Israel. But Balaam blessed them instead and said, "God is not a man, that He should lie. What He says, He will do." In the New Testament, Elizabeth's baby was born, and they named him John, just as the angel said. His father Zacharias could speak again, and he praised God. Zacharias said John would go before the Lord to get His way ready. That Lord is Jesus, whose coming brings light to people sitting in darkness.
It points to Jesus
Balak tries repeatedly to stop God's blessing. He cannot. Why? Because God's plan cannot be overturned. For generations God had promised a Savior. Kings could not stop Him. Enemies could not stop Him. Human failure could not stop Him. Zechariah announces that God's promised rescue is arriving. Jesus is the Dayspring from on high - the light breaking into a dark world. Week 10 took us through the Last Supper, Gethsemane, the cross, the empty tomb, and back to the beginning: God planned this rescue all along.
Talk about it
Talk with someone about this: How does knowing that God's plans cannot be stopped help us trust Him when life seems uncertain?
