The story in children’s words
Balaam looked out over Israel's tents and blessed them again. He said a star would come out of Jacob and a king's scepter would rise out of Israel. King Balak was angry and sent Balaam home with no reward. After that, many of Israel's people turned away to worship a false god, and a terrible sickness came. Phinehas the priest stood up for what was right, and the sickness stopped. At last, in Bethlehem, Mary gave birth to baby Jesus and laid Him in a feeding trough. Angels told shepherds the good news, and the shepherds hurried to see Him. In the temple, old Simeon held baby Jesus in his arms. He said his eyes had seen God's salvation, a light for all nations. The star Balaam saw from far away had led to this little King, Jesus.
It points to Jesus
Centuries before Bethlehem, a pagan prophet hired to curse Israel could only bless instead: "A star will come out of Jacob. A scepter will rise out of Israel" (Numbers 24:17). Then, almost immediately, the nation Balaam could not curse began destroying itself through sin. Blessing from the outside was never enough — Israel needed changed hearts. In Luke 2, the Star arrives as a baby in a manger. Heaven announces to shepherds: "There is born to you today, in David's city, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:11). Old Simeon holds the child and sees God's salvation, "a light for revelation to the nations" (Luke 2:32) — yet even here, the shadow of the cross falls: a sword will pierce Mary's soul. The King came in humility to rescue sinners and transform hearts from within. It ALL points to Jesus.
Talk about it
Talk with someone about this: What does it mean to you personally that God promised the Star centuries before Jesus arrived?
