The story in children’s words

After forty years in the desert, Moses counted God's people all over again. This time he counted the new generation, the children of those who came out of Egypt. Tribe by tribe, family by family, there were more than six hundred thousand men. God knew every family by name, and none of them was forgotten. In the temple in Jerusalem, an old woman named Anna prayed day and night. She thanked God when she saw baby Jesus and told everyone about Him. Jesus grew up in Nazareth, strong and wise. When He was twelve, His parents found Him in the temple, listening to the teachers and asking questions. Jesus said He must be in His Father's house. God knew Jesus' name too, for He is God's own Son.

It points to Jesus

Numbers 26 records a second census, and beneath the names sits a sobering truth: the generation that refused the Promised Land has passed away, and a new generation stands ready. Generations come and go, but God's covenant plan marches steadily forward — human failure never cancels His faithfulness. In Luke, the aged prophetess Anna recognizes the infant Jesus and speaks of Him "to all those who were looking for redemption." Then at twelve years old, Jesus stays behind in the Temple: "Didn't you know that I must be in my Father's house?" (Luke 2:49). He returns home, submits to Mary and Joseph, and "increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men" (Luke 2:52). Even in the quiet, hidden years, Christ walked in spotless obedience — the righteous life we could never live, lived for us. It ALL points to Jesus.

Talk about it

Talk with someone about this: Who has quietly demonstrated steady faithfulness to you over the years, and what did it teach you about God?
