The story in children’s words
God said the land would be shared out fairly, with bigger families getting more and smaller families getting less. Five sisters came to Moses because their father had died with no sons. God said the sisters were right, and they should receive their father's share. Then God showed Moses the good land from a mountain, and Moses laid his hands on Joshua to lead the people next. The people were not to be like sheep without a shepherd. Many years later, John the Baptist cried out in the desert, "Make the way ready for the Lord!" He told people to say sorry, to share food and coats, and to be honest. Then Jesus was baptized, and the Holy Spirit came down on Him like a dove. A voice from heaven said, "You are my beloved Son." God the Father was pointing to Jesus.
It points to Jesus
Moses, knowing he will not enter the land, prays that God will appoint a leader "so God's people would not wander aimlessly" — and God gives Joshua. The daughters of Zelophehad ask for their rightful inheritance, and God honors their plea. Morning and evening sacrifices remind Israel that fellowship with a holy God requires continual atonement. Every piece is a picture: Joshua the shepherd-leader, the endless offerings. Then Luke 3 brings the reality. John preaches repentance that bears visible fruit, and when Jesus comes to be baptized, heaven opens: the Son stands in the water, the Holy Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father's voice declares, "You are my beloved Son. In you I am well pleased" (Luke 3:22). Joshua was an earthly picture, but Jesus is the true Good Shepherd. The repeated sacrifices pointed to His single, once-for-all offering. It ALL points to Jesus.
Talk about it
Talk with someone about this: At Jesus' baptism, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all present. What does that moment tell us about who Jesus is?
