The story in children’s words
God gave His people a way to be washed clean after touching someone who had died. At Kadesh, Miriam died, and the people had no water, so they argued with Moses again. God told Moses to speak to the rock, but Moses struck the rock twice instead. Water still poured out for everyone to drink. Because Moses had not obeyed and honored God, God said Moses and Aaron would not lead the people into the land. Aaron died on Mount Hor, and his son Eleazar took his place. Many years later, an angel came to an old priest named Zacharias in the temple. The angel said his wife Elizabeth would have a son named John. John would get people's hearts ready for the Lord. God was starting the wonderful story that leads to Jesus.
It points to Jesus
Numbers begins with cleansing from the contamination of death. Then water comes from a rock. Luke announces that God's long-awaited rescue is beginning. We need cleansing that ceremonies alone cannot provide. We need living water that satisfies more than physical thirst. We need someone greater than Moses and a Priest who does not pass away. We need Jesus. Moses failed. Aaron died. But God's plan did not fail. The Savior was coming. God keeps His promises.
Talk about it
Talk with someone about this: How can we continue trusting God when His answer seems slow in coming?
