The story in children’s words
God taught His people that a promise made to Him must be kept. He also told Israel to fight against Midian, whose people had led Israel into sin at Peor. Twelve thousand soldiers went, and when they came back, their leaders counted them. Not one soldier was missing. In thanks, the leaders brought gold gifts to God. After His baptism, Jesus went into the desert for forty days and ate nothing. The devil tried to trick Him three times, but Jesus answered with God's words every time and did not sin. Back in His hometown, Jesus read from the prophet Isaiah about good news for the poor and freedom for those who are trapped. Then Jesus said, "Today this Scripture has come true." The people were angry, but Jesus walked safely through them. Jesus beat the devil with God's Word, and He brings the good news to us.
It points to Jesus
Numbers teaches the binding sacredness of vows — a person's word must be kept — and shows God's righteous judgment on Midian. God takes sin with total seriousness; if sin were trivial, Calvary would never have been required. Then Luke 4: "Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit... was led by the Spirit into the wilderness." Where Israel spent forty years in the wilderness and repeatedly failed, Jesus spent forty days fasting and triumphed completely, answering every assault with "It is written." Returning to Nazareth, He reads Isaiah 61 and announces, "Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." The townspeople, blinded by familiarity, reject Him. David's thirst becomes our prayer: "God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you" (Psalm 63:1). The true and faithful Son wields the Word in perfect obedience — and still, some who knew Him best would not receive Him. It ALL points to Jesus.
