Today’s story

Abraham intercedes for Sodom, but the city’s wickedness ripens into judgment. Lot is rescued by mercy, yet compromise leaves deep scars, and the chapter ends with the sobering fruit of a life lived too close to corruption.

Jesus turns from anxiety to trust, calling his disciples to seek first God’s kingdom, judge themselves before judging others, ask boldly, and enter by the narrow gate. The life of faith is both rested and rigorous.

Psalm 8 marvels that the majestic Creator is mindful of frail humanity and has crowned people with honor. Human dignity is grounded in God’s attentive care.

Wisdom, knowledge, and discernment are God’s gifts that protect us from crooked paths. True understanding guards both belief and behavior.

The story in children’s words

Abraham prayed for the city of Sodom, where Lot lived. The city was full of sin, so God sent angels to rescue Lot and his family. Fire fell on the city, but Lot's family was brought out safely. Lot's wife looked back, even though the angels said not to, and she turned into a pillar of salt. Jesus taught us not to worry, because God feeds the birds and dresses the flowers. He said God knows what we need. The God who rescued Lot cares for us too, and Jesus tells us to ask, seek, and knock.

It points to Jesus

Jesus is the greater righteous One who not only intercedes, as Abraham did, but actually saves his people from judgment. He also restores the true dignity of humanity celebrated in Psalm 8.
