Today’s story

Elijah confronts Ahab and the prophets of Baal. On Mount Carmel the living God answers with fire, exposing powerless idols and calling His people back.

Peter explains that God has granted Gentiles repentance leading to life. The church in Antioch grows, and believers are first called Christians there.

God alone is worthy of praise; idols have mouths and eyes but no life.

Foolish conflict is dangerous. Wisdom knows when to stop a quarrel.

The story in children’s words

In the third year with no rain, God sent Elijah back to King Ahab. Obadiah, who ran Ahab's house, had hidden one hundred of God's prophets in caves and fed them, because Jezebel was killing them. On Mount Carmel, Elijah cried, "How long will you waver? If the LORD is God, follow him!" The prophets of Baal called on their god from morning until evening, but there was no voice and no answer. Elijah rebuilt God's altar with twelve stones and had water poured over the offering three times, until the ditch was full. Then he prayed a short prayer, and fire from God fell! It burned up the offering, the wood, the stones, and even the water. All the people fell on their faces and cried, "The LORD, He is God!" Then Elijah prayed seven times, a small cloud like a man's hand rose from the sea, and heavy rain poured down. In Antioch, many people believed in the Lord Jesus and were first called Christians there, and they sent help to hungry believers far away. The God who answered by fire is the same God who gave us Jesus, and idols made by hands can never take His place.

It points to Jesus

The God who answers Elijah is the God who raised Jesus. The church does not carry a dead religion but the good news of the living Lord.
